About Umesh Patil

Artist Statement:

How does one express the ‘good times in life’? Artist Umesh Patil splurges his canvases with colour – colours of life that blossom, meander, flow with a flourish, as joyous and exuberant as the young artist himself.

With a Government Diploma in Fine Art from the L. S. Raheja School of Art, Mumbai, Umesh has gradually grown from his textural and colour-juxtaposed compositions to a maturity in technique, approach and rendering.

the canvases depict a vocabulary of patient indulgence and rarified nurturing. His canvases are referenced from his current state of mind. “Working in the abstract genre, I don’t really know, where I begin and, where I am headed; until that one moment that takes possession of me and urges me to stop; stand back and rejoice in my creation”, he explains.

His palette is unfettered and tends to veer towards the vibrant – Cadmium Red, Crimson Lake, Cerulean Blue, Sap Green, Burnt Sienna, Pyrrole Orange, Cobalt Teal, Hooker’s Green Deep… play with accents of gold and silver. What begins as a dot goes on to become a form with its distinct existence. And every form requires its space; it nudges forward and marks its boundary. But the form has a special character too – it has rhythm. A rhythm that is born of a chain of events that cannot be – do not need to be – reversed.

The application is predominantly knife and roller based with no room for brushwork. Confident strokes of the palette knife merge Umesh’s wandering musings through gentle swishes of the roller and the rhythm moves from abstractness to embodiment of the spontaneous.

“I feel this process is the core of my paintings,” he explains. Colours, textures and forms multiply. Possibilities of change become a natural; merging, transforming, consolidating. “Some forms retain their existence; some get lost in course of time; only paintings remain alive in the present.”
